Monthly Tip - Forehand Drives

A fellow RCDGA member and expert forehand driver once told me "You are going to get someone hurt if you teach them to throw that way". Well you had to have been there to understand just how funny and appropriate that comment is. I'm not going to go into the mechanics of throwing the drive. What I will do is tell you the basics. First you start with the grip. There are 3 types as I know, the one finger where your index finger is slammed against the underside of the disc and your thumb is firmly grasping the top. The second is the two finger traditional grip. This grip your middle finger is pressed against the rim of the disc and your index finger is pressed against your middle finger. Thumb is the same for this grip. The last grip, which is the grip I use is called the power grip. This grip stats with your middle finger pressed against the rim of the disc, with your index finger slightly bent and pressed against the rim behind your middle finger. The rim of the disc fits snuggly in the crease of your hand between the thumb and the index finger. The key to any of these grips is comfort and firmness.

Now... the throw... basically, you are moving your arm from back to front like throwing a baseball sidearm. Your arm should be level to the ground. As your arm is moving forward, you will begin to feel the disc press backward against your fingers. At this point your wrist will begin to flex backward as well. When you feel this pressure is when you want to start the wrist flick forward. Remember, the speed of your flick should be faster then the speed of your arm. This insures correct spin and removes the wobble from the disc.

The best way to perfect this is to go out into a field and throw.

I hope you will take something away from this tip that improves your game.
